Aquatic Invasive Species in Minnesota

Invasive species are species that are not native to Minnesota and cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health.Minnesota's natural resources are threatened by a number of aquatic (water-based) invasive species such as zebra mussels and Eurasian water milfoil.Each boater must make sure his/her boat is free of these aquatic hitchhikers when leaving the lake or river. The following video shows how you can prevent the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species.The MN DNR works to help prevent the spread and promote the management of invasive species.

Reminder of Procedure for Special Events Permit on Lake Minnetonka

Effective last year, the LMCD has authorized the Water Patrol to issue all Special Events Permits. The Special Events Application form has changed. If the event is to be held on Lake Minnetonka, the organizer must agree to comply with new LMCD regulations regarding Aquatic Invasive Species.

It provides links to the LMCD, Minnesota DNR, the US Power Squadron and other organizations that promote boat and water safety. There are 104 lakes and three rivers in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The Hennepin County Water Patrol is responsible for the safety and regulation of all lakes and, in conjunction with the US Coast Guard and adjoining county sheriff's, the rivers of the county.

As summer turns to fall and winter, this responsibility changes from safe boating, to safe snowmobiling, ice fishing and other winter activities.

From here, you can access information about the Water Patrol, apply for temporary structure and special event permits, and find out about rules and regulations on various lakes and rivers, including Lake Minnetonka, the Mississippi River and the Minnesota River.
