| Winter activities on the lakes of Hennepin County are as
much a part of the lives of citizens as summer activities. The work of the
Water Patrol does not end when the lakes and rivers freeze over. In fact,
for a Water Patrol Deputy, training for winter activities takes up
more time than training for summer because the stakes are higher. |

Rescue Sled |
Medical emergencies on the ice are answered by towing a
well-equipped sled with essential emergency supplies.
The sled is equipped with oxygen and first aid kit. Victims are placed on
a backboard to prevent further spinal cord injuries. The orange floating
basket is used when victims are in the water |
| The short days and long nights of winter means that rescue
operations are often conducted in darkness. This sled is equipped with a
generator and several halogen light sets. The light and electrical power
that this piece of equipment is an important tool that makes night
operations efficient and safe. |
